Rafa Benitez has been forced to make the most of what is at his disposal this season.
With limited funds in a time whereby the vast majority of clubs are spending big, it is rather impressive that Newcastle United sit adrift of the relegation zone in 15 points.
Benitez has had to make full use of his squad but seemingly views it as too risky to provide game time to many youngsters in such a testing position in the Premier League. To impress the Spaniard, they must force their way into the first-team reckoning and really impact the side.
Therefore, if this Newcastle DUO does not step up they could be moving on in January…
Freddie Woodman is one of four first-team goalkeepers at Newcastle. With Martin Dubravka as the undisputed number one, the 21-year-old may have to settle for the bench and make an impact if he is called upon between the sticks for the first-team, which is yet to happen this season.
If Karl Darlow is to stay beyond January, Woodman will have his work cut out to even make it onto the bench so in order for him to develop and get first-team game time, he may have to look elsewhere for opportunities.
Local lad Jamie Sterry is third choice right-back Newcastle and it does not look like anything is set to change soon. He has amounted just 90 minutes of first-team football so far this season, coming in the EFL Cup.
DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo are both preferred over the 23-year-old in the Premier League and if Sterry does not step up and force his way into Benitez’s thinking, he may look for game time elsewhere as he will only get better if faith is placed in him to perform.
