The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are confident about staying up this season. Indeed, the punters propping up our bar reckon Rafa Benitez has done just about enough to warrant more money from Mike Ashley (though he may have other ideas) and look forward to hopefully more signings in a few months time.
With that in mind, our punters clad in black and white are starting to discuss potential targets. One of the main areas of concern for our resident Geordies has centred around the lack of cover and competition for the impressive Martin Dubravka between the posts. Indeed, he arrived in January and has proved a revelation on Tyneside, with neither Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot covering themselves in glory over the course of the campaign so far.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for Nick Pope, though his recent call-up to the England squad has led to suggestions Burnley will look to keep him in Lancashire and, right now, the Clarets are probably a more attractive prospect than the Toon Army. Who’d have ever thought you’d say that?
So, Newcastle will have to look elsewhere. Well, perhaps they shouldn’t cast their eyes too far away from Nick Pope and move for his colleague, Tom Heaton.
Injured for most of the season, Heaton’s ailment has allowed Pope to step into his place for both club and country and the 31-year-old could face a battle to get back into the starting eleven under Sean Dyche. Far too good to sit on the bench, the former Manchester United youngster would be a very astute signing up at St. James’ Park.
Valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt, Newcastle could do a lot worse than bringing the England custodian north this summer as Benitez looks to improve on all fronts ahead of next season.
