The recent signing of Ki on a free transfer certainly came as a surprise for the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern and a welcome one at that. Indeed, the punters propping up the bar were happy with a new signing and hope to see more arrivals on that very front.
What they don’t want to hear, however, is any suggestion of more problems for Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard has had it fairly hard on the transfer front during his two years in charge at St. James’ Park and, clearly, the Toon Army must improve if he’s going to be happy in his role.
With that in mind, reports from the Daily Telegraph have barely proved that promising. According to them, the Magpies are keen on a move to lure Andros Townsend back to the club, though Benitez himself is understood to be facing a transfer dilemma on Tyneside.
Though he doesn’t particularly want to sell Matt Ritchie in order to finance a move for the England man, apparent interest from the likes of Stoke City could reportedly tempt his hand as he looks to raise funds. Obviously, losing a player of Ritchie’s status is far from ideal, though could be necessary if he is to start getting players in.
Rafa never seems to have it easy at Newcastle. Bringing Townsend back to Newcastle would certainly be a good move, though if he’s to lose Ritchie as part of a deal, it leaves the Magpies in a similar position in terms of squad depth as they are this season. However, it could be a sacrifice worth making, considering the ages of the two players.
