Benton events led to Newcastle United exit in January – Report

At long last, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern were able to welcome a new striker late on Deadline Day and, following Joselu’s performance against Burnley, it couldn’t have come a moment too soon.

Indeed, the arrival of Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester City has absolutely delighted our punters clad in black and white, who haven’t had much to shout about in front of goal all season. With that in mind, some insight into life behind the scenes for the Magpies’ frontline have proven rather interesting.

According to the Chronicle, one of the reasons Aleksandar Mitrovic was rarely used prior to his January loan move to Fulham was due to the Serbian’s reported lack of application in training. While the forward was a popular figure on Tyneside, the likes of Joselu and Dwight Gayle had largely been used ahead of him all season, apparently down to the fact he wasn’t performing to an adequate level in training.

The players are understood to have been told that training statistics would directly correlate to who starts on the weekend and it seems the former Anderlecht man did little to impress Rafa Benitez.

Landlord’s Verdict:

The curious case of Aleksandar Mitrovic has finally been resolved. No one could really understand why he wasn’t getting a look in, though if he wasn’t performing in training, it’s easy to see why Benitez allowed him to depart.
