Though Newcastle United’s draw against Swansea City over the course of the weekend wasn’t as big a disaster as it could have been, the punters propping up our bar here in the Transfer Tavern realise Premier League survival relies largely on January reinforcement arriving.
Indeed, our regulars clad in black and white desperately hope Rafa Benitez can bring some players in over the course of the transfer window, though reports from the Daily Mail have provided a worrying update on that front. They claim it is increasingly unlikely that Mike Ashley will pump any cash into the Magpies and talk of an Amanda Staveley-led takeover has gone quiet on Tyneside.
During their draw with the Swans, Benitez was forced to field the same XI he did in the Championship last season, showing just how little the squad has improved since winning promotion, seriously worrying our resident Geordies. As you can imagine, they are desperate for some positive news on the transfer front, though it seems like they are unlikely to get it.
Ashley appears to be dragging out his long-awaited exit at St. James’ Park, though surely he should move to protect his investment. Should the Magpies go down, he will lose out on any money coming, as well as the services of Benitez, you’d have to think.
