The Toon Army are feeling apprehensive in the Transfer Tavern due to their club’s failure to bring a new striker to the club so far in the mid-season window.
Things rarely run smoothly at Newcastle United, and this season has certainly not been an anomaly to the rule. Mike Ashley is yet to conclude negotiations to sell the club despite supposed interest from Amanda Staveley, but that doesn’t appear to be deterring him from making a club record signing this month.
According to reports in The Sun, Newcastle are in talks with Feyenoord regarding a transfer for their lethal Danish striker Nicolai Jorgensen. Jorgensen (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) is the clubs second top-goalscorer so far this season with 7 league goals from 14 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie. The report seems to imply that Newcastle are holding out for a club to reach their valuation of Aleksandar Mitrovic before signing Jorgensen, but that strategy could ultimately relegate The Magpies this season.
So far this season, Dwight Gayle and Joselu have failed to find the back of the net on a regular basis at the spearhead of Newcastle’s forward line, and their lacklustre performances have served to highlight the clubs need to sign a new striker this month.
Newcastle have also been linked with Leicester City’s Islam Slimani this month in The Daily Star, but Slimani’s failure to secure a place in Claude Puel’s starting eleven should deter Benitez from making a bid.
Jorgensen will undoubtedly represent a risk for Newcastle due to his lack of experience in the Premier League and due to previous examples of players failing to make a successful transition from the Dutch Eredivisie to the Premier League, such as Memphis Depay and Vincent Janssen.
However, his record of 34 goals and 20 assists from 61 Feyenoord appearances certainly suggests that the Danish international is far from a fraud and worth paying big-money for this month.
One way or another, the signing of a prolific striker this month will give Newcastle a fantastic chance of remaining in the English top-flight, so Ashley must make one final redeeming gesture to the supporters by breaking their transfer record for Jorgensen this month.
