Almiron guided his club to the MLS Cup recently and earned plenty of praise for his exceptional performances. Unsurprisingly, the Paraguay international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League with Newcastle leading the race for his signature. However, the American club are unwilling lose their prized asset and reports suggest Newcastle will have to smash their transfer record to sign him.
While Almiron has been in great form, he remains untested at the highest level and his signing would be a massive risk by the Magpies. Instead, Benitez should turn his attention to his former stomping ground and look to lure one of La Liga’s brightest talents to England now the January transfer window is officially open.
The ideal target would be Celta Vigo maestro – Brais Mendez. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the Spanish playmaker is enjoying a prominent role in the first-team after progressing through the club’s youth academy. Mendez has started 13 games in La Liga this season, earning plenty of plaudits from fans and pundits as a result of his impressive showings.
The 22-year-old primarily operates as an attacking midfielder but can also play on either play. Mendez has shown his eye for goal, finding the back of the net four times already this season. The youngster also has the technical ability and vision to carve open defences, registering five assists for his team-mates – he is exactly what Benitez needs to unlock the potential of his forward line.
Mendez won’t remain unnoticed for much longer, so Newcastle need to move quickly to bring him to Tyneside.
