Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait for the summer transfer window reopen after reading stories in the papers linking them to numerous players around the globe.
Despite a lack of investment, Rafael Benitez has guided the Magpies to the top ten of the Premier League this season. However, if Newcastle are to challenge for a European place next season, serious investment into the playing squad is needed. Mike Ashley has been actively looking to sell the club, but no offers have come forward yet.
The summer window is a key period for the club as they look to re-establish themselves as a top seven club. Benitez must be backed in the window to revamp his squad. One man who should be high on his shortlist is West Brom defender – Kieran Gibbs. The former Arsenal defender has been one of the few shining lights at the Hawthorns this season.
With the Baggies now relegated to the Championship, the 28-year-old will be in high demand. The former England international is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt and has been linked with a move to St. James Park in the past. However, the Magpies were unwilling to pay his wages which scuppered the deal.
The defender has plenty of Premier League and European experience from his time with Arsenal and would be a key player on Tyneside. Newcastle would surely face competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature but are an attractive proposition if Benitez adds some key players to his squad.
Paul Dummett has recently penned a new deal with the club, but Gibbs would be a serious upgrade. Still only 28, he is entering his prime and Newcastle would be foolish to turn down a move.
