Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side move seven points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three courtesy of a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with their relegation rivals off the back of successive victories at St James’ Park, and having lost just one of their previous six matches in the league. And the Magpies recorded another vital three points in the North East on Saturday as an Ayoze Perez strike ten minutes from time was enough to clinch the win for Benitez’s side, a result which moved them up to 12th place in the Premier League table, and significantly seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing in confidence that their side will indeed beat the drop this term, although they are well aware that they must continue their fine form between now and the end of the season to do so.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Udinese are keeping tabs on Martin Dubravka’s efforts for the North East heavyweights ahead of a possible summer move.
Significantly, Newcastle have ‘first option’ to land the Slovakia international, and as such it requires managing director Lee Charnley to act swiftly in the early stages of the summer to land the goalkeeper for manager Benitez, as he has been brilliant since his arrival in January.
Ultimately, Benitez has been after a goalkeeper pretty much ever since his side were promoted to the Premier League last season, although he failed to bring one in over the summer and as such was left with Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow, both of whom weren’t overly convincing in the first half of this season.
And while Dubravka’s arrival was hardly met with huge delight, the 29-year-old has been outstanding between the sticks for the Magpies, starting their last five Premier League games and shipping just four goals in that time, all of which away from St James’ Park.
His efforts in their 1-0 win over Manchester United back in February, his debut for the club, suggested that Benitez had indeed solved his goalkeeping conundrum, and talk was already taking place among our resident Newcastle fans about a permanent deal for the Slovakian star this summer.
But reports that Udinese are also keeping tabs on Dubravka have to be noted by the Magpies hierarchy, as although they reportedly have the first option on landing the 29-year-old this summer, they will have to act quickly to prevent the shot-stopper being potentially swayed by other interest.
Clearly, the 29-year-old has solved the goalkeeping problems at St James’ Park and could well be their number one for the coming years, but it will require Charnley to act fast in the summer to bring the shot-stopper to the North East permanently such is Udinese’s interest.
Failure to do so could cost the Magpies their chance of landing Dubravka permanently.
