Newcastle fans are eager to see the club show some ambition in the transfer market this summer.

The Magpies are yet to make a significant signing in the transfer window thus far. Mikel Merino signed but immediately left for Real Sociedad while Martin Dubravka completed a permanent move to St. James Park. While their signings have been smart, Rafael Benitez needs to sign someone to get fans off their seats.

With Premier League rivals such as Wolves and West Ham splashing the cash, the Spaniard needs to open his chequebook soon. With the World Cup now over, it’s likely that business will now pick up. Benitez must look to one of the tournament’s top players for his next signing.

Russia winger, Denis Cheryshev, was one of the stand out performers, helping his country reach the quarter-finals of the competition – knocking out Spain on the way. He scored four goals in just three starts and earned plenty of praise for his showings. Currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, Newcastle should bring him to the Premier League.

Cheryshev has worked with Benitez in the past during their time at Real Madrid. Both men failed to impress at the Bernabeu, and the 27-year-old has only enjoyed a bit-part role with current club Villarreal.

Moving to the Premier League could be just what he needs to relaunch his career. If his World Cup form continues, Newcastle could land one of the signings of the summer.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?
