It’s been far from ideal for Newcastle United fans over the last few months. Indeed, yet again Mike Ashley failed to back Rafa Benitez in the summer and, after a winless start to the campaign, these are uncertain times for the club.
Amid a backdrop of uncertainty and unrest, one of the biggest grievances amongst the Toon Army appears to be in regard to the coverage they seem to be getting. For the Geordies, the long-running narrative pitted against them that they are a fanbase that either demand, or believe they have a right to win, major trophies is a truly tiring one.
For the most part, they aren’t. Like any football club in the world, there are some fans less logical than others but the idea that Newcastle supporters on the whole believe they need to be winning trophies or challenging at the top of the Premier League stopped being true a long time ago.
All they want is the dire situation under Mike Ashley’s ownership covered correctly. Too often are pundits who have simply no idea about the situation asked for their thoughts on the matter, only to gloss over many of the worst traits or actions of the Sports Direct mogul.
So, we’ve recently been asking our Newcastle supporting readers to rank the pundits they find the worst. Given the options of Richard Keys, Andy Gray, Dennis Wise, Craig Bellamy, Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp, we’ll go into the top three now. For the full vote, see below.
3. Andy Gray
The Scotsman, currently working on beIN Sports, has made some pretty ill-informed comments about the Magpies. Often, he’s got the extent (or lack thereof) of Newcastle’s summer business to take aim at the supporters, only winding them up even further.
Seen as a joke figure by the Geordies, the former Everton striker isn’t a popular figure on Tyneside.
2. Dennis Wise
Once employed by Mike Ashley as Newcastle’s (ill-fated) Director of Football, occasional Sky Sports pundit Dennis Wise constantly seems to rile the Geordie faithful.
His staunch defence of Ashley and questioning of Rafa Benitez certainly sparked a reaction amongst the Toon Army on Twitter and, much like his time working for the club, the former Chelsea man doesn’t appear to understand Newcastle United or those who follow them.
1. Richard Keys
Andy Gray’s partner in crime over on beIN Sports, Richard Keys has been voted the worst Newcastle United pundit.
His calling out of Rafa Benitez seems to have left an impression on the Toon Army, as well as his suggestion that the club would be no more without the mere existence of the wonderful Mike Ashley. It takes a lot to beat Gray and Wise to the punch, but Keys’ ill-informed and seemingly purposely controversial opinion on the club looks to have helped him do that.
