Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are rolling back the years, as they relive the success of some of the best moments in the club’s illustrious history.
The Magpies have lost their way in recent times as their first season back in the top-flight is bordering on a disaster, as an immediate relegation back to the Championship is looming large for the Toon Army. Indeed, after taking a stroll down memory lane to enjoy the glory of yesteryear, one club legend in particular has had a look back on his own time at St James’ Park, as according to reports in the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United legend Kevin Nolan has said his biggest regret was leaving the club.
Kevin Nolan breathed and lived for Newcastle United during his days at St James’ Park, as the aggressor in an attacking midfield role that saw the 35-year-old live out his finest days in the black and white stripes. Having amassed 29 goals in 85 appearances for the Magpies, the Englishman was sure to bring happiness upon the faces of many with his desire and passion being what fans loved in their iconic captain.
Although, all good times must come to an end as Nolan went on to leave the club in 2011, which can be put mainly down to the club’s choices as a batch of overseas players were shipped in to replace many in the current squad. As Mike Ashley’s wrongdoings continue to lead Newcastle United down a path filled with despair, his actions were a huge reason behind the departure of one of their greatest ever midfielders.
A cult-hero on Tyneside after bagging a hat-trick against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, his comments have pulled on the heartstrings of our resident Geordies.
“It is my greatest regret in football,”
“But it was such a massive regret for me to leave. I don’t think any of us really had a choice but to leave. They made it difficult for us to stay.”
Kevin Nolan was a special player during his days at Newcastle United, and after working his way up to captaincy he was exactly what the club stood for. But, in difficult times you can’t blame the midfielder for having to make a career somewhere else, as this could be one of the biggest mistakes in the club’s history. Although, with him now coming out to state his regret on leaving the club, fans will love the touch of class from a player that all of the Toon Army had grown to love.
