David Moyes’ shadow looms large over St. James’ Park

Newcastle United are in deep danger and time could be running out for Rafael Benitez.

The Magpies’ struggles off the field have been well documented with fans currently at war with owner Mike Ashley. Ashley wants to sell the club and hasn’t provided Benitez with sufficient funds in the transfer market to bolster his squad. With no buyer forthcoming, it seems the fans are stuck with Ashley for the foreseeable future. Defeat to Brighton at the weekend leaves Newcastle rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Indeed, Newcastle’s performance against the Seagulls wasn’t too bad but squandering a number of valuable chances ultimately proved costly. Benitez was adamant he would not be sacked and guaranteed that he could save the club from relegation. However, if their fortunes do not improve – Ashley could be forced to make drastic changes.

One man he could turn to is former Manchester United manager – David Moyes. The Scot is currently searching for a new job after being released by West Ham at the end of the season. Moyes was hired to keep the Hammers up following a dismal run of form and was ultimately successful. However, the board wanted to take the club in a different direction and chose to hire Manuel Pellegrini as his replacement.

The former Everton boss remains one of the most experienced managers available and his time with West Ham shows he has what it takes to save a club from the brink. One sticking point could be the fact that Moyes once managed Newcastle’s rivals, Sunderland. However, desperate times call for desperate measures and the 55-year-old could be the best option on the market.
