Nobody wants to see Rafa Benitez walk away from Newcastle United, that much is clear. However, considering the state of the regime he’s working under and the relatively short amount of time left on his contract, that appears to be a very realistic possibility.
Indeed, should the Spaniard leave the club at the end of the season, it’d quite clearly be a nightmare for all involved. He’s the most popular managerial figure on Tyneside since Sir Bobby Robson and watching a top class figure such as the former Liverpool coach leave would truly be gutting.
Still, life would have to go on.
With that in mind, we recently asked our Newcastle supporting readers whether or not they’d take Brentford boss Dean Smith as a potential replacement. The 47-year-old is by no means in the same league as Benitez, though is doing a sterling job down at Griffin Park, putting together a thoroughly entertaining side battling for promotion.
One of the most promising young managers in the English game, it seems he’d be a popular replacement should the worst case scenario become a miserable reality. Well, popular as any man following Benitez could be.
As you can see from the results of our poll, 65% of polled supporters would welcome Smith at St. James’ Park, such is the nature of his work with the Bees. Still, hopefully it never gets to that, but this is Mike Ashley we’re talking about.
