Dodged Bullet: Newcastle United and Nicolai Jorgensen

There are not many things Newcastle United fans will ever thank Mike Ashley for.

However, his stubbornness, tightness, stinginess (or any other noun you want to associate with the owner), may have actually saved the Magpies from having another poor and expensive signing on their books.

The Toon Army have been unfortunate to witness some rather awful talents at St. James’ Park over the years, which is in stark contrast to some of the legends that have graced the hallowed turf in the north-east.

And, Nicolai Jorgensen could have been just one of the latest to join them if it were not for Ashley’s refusal to get the cheque book out for expensive signings.

According to a report by the Newcastle Chronicle back in the summer of 2018, Feyenoord had told Newcastle that they would have to stump up a fee north of £20million to land their Danish striker.

However, as we all know, a move failed to materialise and saw (a successful) Salomon Rondon arrive instead.

And as time moved on, it became abundantly clear just how fortunate the Geordies’ were to not splash the cash on him.

Jorgensen had a poor World Cup for Denmark last summer and did nothing to justify the price-tag that Feyenoord had placed on him. Those performances would have surely made some of the St James’ Park faithful question if he was even an upgrade on some of their options at the time as well.

Admittedly, he had been impressive in the Eredivisie for the Dutch outfit, however, he was also a striker that went a couple of months in the middle of the campaign without a goal – Newcastle certainly do not need that on their plate.

The 28-year-old also suffered an injury in football’s biggest competition as well and prevented him from playing in the first four games of the season as well, which will have been no good for the Toon.

Jorgensen may have had a decent campaign for Feyenoord this year following the bad start, having netted seven in his 24 top-flight appearances (Transfermarkt), however, that is not any better than what Rondon has managed to achieve.

Well done Mr Ashley! You might have helped Newcastle (and yourself!) dodge a rather expensive bullet and save yourself a bit of cash (kerching!). But don’t expect the fans to thank you for too much else…
