Newcastle patrons in the Transfer Tavern today are toasting Aleksandar Mitrovic, following an incredibly honest interview from the Magpies centre-forward.
The Toon Army suffered a humiliating relegation from the Premier League last season, despite Champions League winner Rafa Benitez taking over a relatively talented squad at the start of March.
The fall down to the second tier saw a number of key players leave Newcastle last summer, most notably Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum – who both moved to the Premier League in big-money deals.
However, Mitrovic elected to stay at St. James’ Park and has been aiding the Magpies’ bid for instant promotion from the Championship, claiming four goals and three assists in 18 league appearances this term – only seven being starts.
And the Serbian international, who has become a bit of a fan favourite on Tyneside, has admitted he stayed with Newcastle because he felt responsible for their relegation.
In a recent interview with The Chronicle, he said; “I was part of the team that were relegated and I feel responsible. I want to try to help the team to get back. We’re on a good run now, though, and hopefully at the end of the season we’ll be back.”
Mitrovic hasn’t always been a part of Benitez’s plans this season but with Championship top scorer Dwight Gayle out injured, he could become an incredibly important figure for Newcastle over the coming weeks.
The Tynesiders are currently setting the pace at the top of the Championship, but only have a five-point cushion between themselves and third-place Huddersfield.
