Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the summer transfer window, as their team go in search of signings that can take them to the next level in the Premier League next season.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve great credit for securing a top half finish upon their return to the English top-flight, with the Magpies finishing tenth in the table with 44 points from their 38 matches. However, it’s evident from their limitations over the course of the campaign that further reinforcements will be needed over the summer to take the club on another level next time round, and indeed to convince Benitez to remain at St James’ Park given he has just 12 months left on his current deal.
However, there is one man who could be on his way out of the club this summer, as recent reports suggest that the Magpies will consider offers for striker Adam Armstrong, who spent last season on loan at League One runners-up Blackburn Rovers.
Yet, the North East heavyweights should forget about letting the 21-year-old leave the club, as there’s only one forward they should seek to sell this summer, namely Joselu.
Ultimately, while Armstrong has failed to net in 21 senior appearances for Newcastle during his career so far, his various loan spells down the Football League, notably at Coventry City, Barnsley, and more recently Blackburn, suggest that he has the potential to go on and become a quality forward.
And at the tender age of 21, there is plenty of time for him to do that, whereas one simply cannot see that potential in 28-year-old Joselu, who underwhelmed greatly in his debut campaign at St James’ Park.
The Spaniard mustered just four Premier League goals for the Magpies, of which just one came in 2018, and the fact that he failed to start any of their final 13 league matches suggests that Benitez has lost faith in his ability after a below-par first half of the season.
And with Newcastle likely eyeing up additions this summer in a bid to move up the league table once again, players like Joselu will find themselves even further down the pecking order, and likely considering their futures at the North East giants.
Whereas Armstrong has definite potential, and could well benefit from further loan spells before sustaining a challenge at Newcastle, the same simply cannot be said of Joselu, who as such is not good enough to lead the line for the Magpies next time round.
Thus, they should forget about selling Armstrong, as there is only one forward Benitez’s side should seek to sell this summer, namely Joselu.
