Newcastle United supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side go down 1-0 at Everton on Monday night to bring their four-match winning streak in the Premier League to an end.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Toffees having beaten Southampton, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, and Arsenal in their preceding four league games, a run which has taken them beyond the 40-point mark and into the top half of the division. Yet the Magpies were unable to keep that fine streak going on Merseyside on Monday as Theo Walcott’s strike six minutes after half time was enough to clinch all three points for Sam Allardyce’s side, thus leaving Newcastle in tenth place in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many deflated Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are nonetheless hoping that their team can indeed finish the season strongly and build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Burnley with a move for West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez.
Benitez’s Newcastle were also linked with the £9 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) last summer, and the 28-year-old should indeed forget about a move to Turf Moor as St James’ Park appears to be the perfect destination for the striker.
Ultimately, the Englishman looks set to endure relegation with the Baggies this season, although it’s not through the lack of trying given that Rodriguez has scored 11 goals in all competitions for the club, more than any other West Brom player this term.
And with goals before at Premier League level with Southampton, including 15 back in the 2013/14 season, it’s clear that the 28-year-old is a hugely adept forward at top-flight level, and as such looks almost certain to leave the Hawthorns if and when their relegation is confirmed.
And while a move to Burnley may seem a good option, what with Rodriguez having spent time there earlier in his career, he’d get greater playing opportunities at Newcastle.
Clearly, the Magpies have struggled in the striking ranks this season, with Ayoze Perez their top-scorer with just seven goals, and fellow forward Dwight Gayle and Joselu contributing only five and four respectively.
Thus, to move to the next level under Benitez in the coming years, the North East giants need someone leading the line who is able to put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis – Rodriguez could be that man.
Whereas at Turf Moor, it remains to be seen whether the one-time England international would get ahead of the likes of Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood, and Sam Vokes in Sean Dyche’s side, what with all three proving their worth over the course of the campaign. And at the age of 28, he’ll surely be seeking regular football at a key point in his career.
And there’s little doubt that Rodriguez would become the main man at Newcastle, which is why he should forget about Burnley as St James’ Park appears to be the perfect destination for him to continue his Premier League career.
