Newcastle United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team take another huge step towards Premier League safety courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Leicester City on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Foxes having lost just one of their preceding seven league games, a run which included significant victories over fellow strugglers Southampton and Huddersfield Town. And the Magpies picked up their tenth league win of the season on Saturday as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez set them on their way to all three points at the King Power Stadium, although they were made to sweat late on when Jamie Vardy got one back for Claude Puel’s side.
Regardless, there have been many thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are supremely confident that their team will avoid relegation this season, what with their club sat tenth in the division with just six matches to play.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their side with a move for Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup.
Sam Allardyce’s Everton are also thought to be interested in the Turkey international, yet the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) should forget about making the move to Goodison Park, as St James’ Park holds better prospects for the 25-year-old.
Ultimately, Ozyakup has enjoyed a fine spell in his homeland ever since leaving Arsenal for Besiktas back in 2012, with the midfielder scoring 27 goals and laying on 49 assists in 214 appearances for the Turkish giants.
And in racking up several appearances in the top-flight and indeed in European football, alongside two Super Lig titles, the 25-year-old would return to England a much more rounded and experienced individual than the one that Arsenal let go back in 2012, and as such could make a big impact at Benitez’s Newcastle.
The Magpies look like they will indeed beat the drop this season, but it’s evident from their campaign thus far that reinforcements will be needed at St James’ Park to continue their upward trajectory next season, with the centre of midfield an area arguably in need of strengthening.
Shelvey has been excellent at times this season but still remains volatile and ultimately untrustworthy over the course of a campaign, and while Mo Diame has been much better since the turn of the year, his early-season efforts will surely be of concern to Benitez.
Add in Isaac Hayden, who has done well when in the side, and linked-away ace Mikel Merino, and it’s clear that more is needed in those central midfield ranks to take Newcastle to the next level – Ozyakup would certainly bolster that department.
Significantly though, it would appear to be a wiser move for the Turkey international, what with competition for places at Everton fierce in the central midfield department among Idrissa Gueye, Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies, and Wayne Rooney, that’s not to mention injured James McCarthy and on loan star Muhamed Besic.
Thus, it’s difficult to see where Ozyakup would fit in at Goodison Park, whereas first team football appears more likely at Benitez’s Newcastle, a side very much on the up and potentially set for a fine season next time round should the Spaniard get sufficient backing in the summer.
Subsequently, the North East appears to be a much more attractive proposition for the 25-year-old both in terms of first team chances and indeed the future of the club, so he should forget about Everton and instead opt for Newcastle this summer.
