Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their team seeking to build upon their impressive tenth place finish last time round.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve huge credit for securing a top half finish upon return to the top-flight last season, that all after winning the Championship title just 12 months previous. But for the North East heavyweights to move up to the next level this term, and perhaps towards their former glories, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed in several areas of the squad, but whether owner Mike Ashley releases the funds for Benitez to do that remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, there are many optimistic Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports suggesting that it will cost £20 million to bring striker Nicolai Jorgensen to St James’ Park.
And with other reports noting that Liverpool want £15 million for Daniel Sturridge, the Magpies must forget about Jorgensen and instead chase what appears to be a summer bargain for the Reds forward.
Ultimately, the Magpies were heavily linked with Denmark international Jorgensen during the winter window given their evident problems in the attacking third of the pitch, but since then the Ajax frontman hasn’t exactly set the world alight with just three league goals in 2018.
And £20 million seems a bit steep for someone who has never played in the Premier League before, and has breached the 20-goal mark in just one season as a professional.
And while our resident Newcastle fans will rightly have some concerns over Sturridge’s injury issues, a £15 million deal for someone who is prolific at top-flight level without doubt represents better value for money.
The 28-year-old, who missed out on selection for the England squad for this summer’s World Cup, has scored a mightily impressive 75 goals in just 200 appearances at top-flight level, be it for Manchester City, Chelsea, or indeed Liverpool.
But with the striker struggling for regular football at Anfield, pretty much ever since Jurgen Klopp was appointed manager back in 2015, it’s clear that his future lies away from Merseyside – Newcastle must seek to do a deal.
Yes, Sturridge has struggled greatly with injuries in the last few years, and as such it would be a risk to lure him to St James’ Park, but for just £15 million, it could turn out to be an absolute bargain as, if he can stay fit, he will score goals, and lots of them.
Thus, a £20 million move for Jorgensen is without doubt a big risk given he has never played football in England before, and while moving for Sturridge also comes without dangers, for £5 million cheaper alongside his fine goal-scoring record, it’s a bargain they must chase this summer.
