Forget Man United: This £13.5m-rated star’s future absolutely lies at Newcastle

Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their team seeking to improve upon an impressive tenth place finish in the top-flight last term.

Rafa Benitez’s men only returned to English football’s top tier back in August after winning the Championship title the season before, and looked set for a relegation battle when they were languishing in and around the bottom three at the turn of the year. However, the Magpies put together a fine run of form post-Christmas to eventually seal a top half finish, from which Benitez will hope to take the club even further this time round.

Consequently, there are many optimistic Newcastle fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports suggesting that Manchester United are set to offer defender Luke Shaw a new contract.

However, given the £13.5 million-rated (as per Transfermarkt) star’s struggles at Old Trafford, alongside the reported interest shown in him by Benitez’s side in recent times, the 22-year-old should forget about United, as his future lies at St James’ Park.

Ultimately, things just simply haven’t worked out for the left back since his move to United back in 2014, with the 22-year-old managing just 66 first team appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side, at the same time falling down the pecking order in the England ranks.

And with Ashley Young arguably Mourinho’s number one choice in the left back role at Old Trafford, alongside the seemingly strained relationship the manager and Shaw have, the youngster’s future prospects at United don’t look good at all.

Thus, while a new contract offer could perhaps suggest that Mourinho is willing to back the defender, Shaw must weigh up whether it is in his best interests to remain at Old Trafford, with it arguable that a move to Newcastle would be better for his career development.

Clearly, the Magpies deserve huge credit for finishing tenth last season, but it’s equally as clear that reinforcements will be needed this summer if they are to build and improve upon that effort this time round.

And many of our resident Newcastle fans feel that the full back ranks are the one area lacking in sufficient depth and quality, as although both DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett did well last term, neither are likely to help take them to the next level – Shaw could though.

The 22-year-old may well have endured a tough time at United, but one mustn’t forget that he was absolutely brilliant for Southampton to earn a move to Old Trafford – he was even named in the PFA Team of the Year back in 2014 such were his efforts for the Saints.

And regular football for a side looking up like Newcastle could be exactly what he needs to get his career back on track, which is why he must think twice about penning an extension at United, and instead consider St James’ Park as his next destination.
