Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side record a fourth straight Premier League victory courtesy of a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Gunners having beaten Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their previous three league games, results which moved them up to the dizzy heights of tenth place in the division. And the Magpies breached the 40-point barrier on Sunday as well as goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie after Alexandre Lacazette’s opener secured a deserved three points for the North East giants, thus moving them 13 points clear of danger prior to Southampton’s 0-0 draw with Leicester City on Thursday evening.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already looking forward to next season’s Premier League campaign, one in which they hope their side will move to the next level under manager Benitez.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Fulham are keen on securing a permanent deal for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Yet there’s only one forward that Newcastle should be considering getting rid of this summer, and that’s Spaniard Joselu.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old is simply not good enough for the Premier League having managed just four goals for the Magpies this season, the latest of which coming back in January against Swansea City.
Yes, the Spaniard offers something else in terms of all round capabilities as a striker, but he just doesn’t get enough goals, and for someone often leading the line on their own, that’s a problem, to the point that Benitez has often resorted to two upfront in recent times with Dwight Gayle earning more starts since the turn of the year.
And it’s not as if Joselu hasn’t been getting chances to score either, with the former Stoke City forward guilty of missing very good opportunities earlier in the season, those that if they had gone in would have made the last few weeks a lot easier for Newcastle fans.
And with Gayle doing reasonably well when called upon in recent times, Perez hitting form as the season draws to a close, and Benitez willing to give on loan star Islam Slimani a chance to prove his worth, it’s not looking good for Joselu ahead of the new season.
And with Mitrovic bagging goals on loan at Fulham, Benitez could well be tempted to give the Serbia international an opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
As such, the Magpies shouldn’t be contemplating selling the 23-year-old this summer, as Joselu is the only forward the club should be considering getting rid of during the close season.
