According to The Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are seeking to rival fellow Premier League side Tottenham for the signature of Nice striker Alassane Plea. The 25-year-old has been in excellent goal-scoring form for the French outfit in the last few years, but with Spurs striker Harry Kane arguably one of the best in the world at present, the Frenchman should seek to opt for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle over the North Londoners.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old would join Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs as nothing more than a back-up to England international Kane, who has thrust himself to the top of the striker ranks in the last few years in netting 140 goals in 213 appearances for the club, including 41 in his best season to date last time round.
As such, Plea would have to make-do with the odd start and appearance here and there were he to opt for Tottenham this summer, whereas there is little doubting that he would become the main man at St James’ Park were he to move to Newcastle.
Clearly, the Magpies struggled in the forward department last season with only Ayoze Perez reaching double figures in all competitions, with the likes of Joselu and Dwight Gayle failing to produce the goods on a consistent basis.
And if Benitez is serious about taking the club forward this term, and perhaps back to their former glories, they absolutely need a reliable and proven goal-scorer, as their tally of 39 goals from their 38 games simply must be improved upon this time round.
And Nice’s Plea could well be that man, as the 25-year-old has enjoyed a fine few years in front of goal in netting 21 times in all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit last term, adding to the 14 he bagged the campaign before in their run to third place in the French top-flight.
Thus, the 25-year-old has all the qualities missing from the Newcastle front line at present, and while it is unlikely to be cheap luring him to St James’ Park, he is the sort of player owner Mike Ashley and the club’s hierarchy have to target this summer if they are to move to the next level.
And for Plea himself, while a move to Spurs may be of serious interest, he only needs to look at how Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have faired in the last few years to understand that it’s a move fraught with danger.
As such, instead of going to play second-fiddle to 24-year-old Kane, the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) should forget about Spurs and instead opt for Benitez’s Newcastle this summer.
