Newcastle United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team all but secure their Premier League status courtesy of an impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the North London heavyweights having beaten Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their previous three league games, results which moved them ten points clear of the relegation zone. And the Magpies reached the 40-point mark on Sunday despite falling behind to Alexandre Lacazette’s opener, with goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie securing a deserved three points for the North East giants, thus keeping them tenth but moving them 13 points clear of the drop.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are already planning ahead for next season, what with their side just a few points away from mathematically securing their place in the Premier League for 2018/19.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Tottenham with a summer move for Leicester City winger Demarai Gray.
Yet several of those Newcastle fans lining up at the bar are urging the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to forget about a move to Spurs, as St James’ Park appears to be the perfect destination for the 21-year-old.
Ultimately, Gray is struggling for regular football under Claude Puel at Leicester, with the England Under-21 international starting just 14 times in the Premier League so far this season, yet coming off the bench on 16 occasions.
As such, the winger hasn’t been able to find any consistency to his play, and while there have been bright moments like against Everton back in October, there have been some under-par displays as well.
And while moving to Tottenham may seem a good move on the surface, it’s difficult to see how he would increase his gametime at the North London club, given that manager Mauricio Pochettino already has a plethora of attacking talent to choose from in Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, and Erik Lamela.
Thus, Spurs doesn’t appear to be the right place for Gray in his bid for more regular football, but Newcastle is.
The Magpies have been in fine form in recent times but it’s clear that they need reinforcements in several areas of the squad if they are to move to the next level next season, especially the attacking ranks given how few goals they have managed this term.
Christian Atsu has been an irregular feature in the side in recent times to perhaps suggest that he isn’t in Benitez’s immediate plans, while there are concerns that the North East giants may struggle to land Kenedy permanently this summer amid reported interest from Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and indeed Tottenham.
Thus, it’s clear that the winger ranks are somewhat lacking in sufficient depth even now, let alone were they unable to land Kenedy this summer, and that must be of interest to Gray, who would surely get the opportunity to stake a claim for regular football, and thus start fulfilling his undoubted potential with regular minutes on the pitch.
As such, the 21-year-old should forget about a move to North London, as the North East appears to be the perfect destination for Gray to finally fulfil his potential.
