The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been absolutely full of joy recently thanks to suggestions the club could soon have a new owner. Indeed, Mike Ashley is perhaps the most unpopular chairman in the Premier League and our punters clad in black and white can’t wait to see the back of him.
With talk of a takeover on Toon tongues right now, it’s easy to forget that the Magpies have a game this weekend. On Saturday, they host basement side Crystal Palace, looking to continue their good start to life in the Premier League under Rafa Benitez.
Though the Eagles have been poor this season, they recently beat Chelsea and could spring a surprise. One Palace star, in particular, will know exactly what it’s like to play at St. James’ Park, when Andros Townsend returns to Tyneside.
Since leaving Newcastle last summer, the England international has been strongly linked with a return to the club after failing to hit the heights in south London. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the winger has revealed he’ll ‘enjoy’ his return to a club he almost kept up in 2016 with a string of fine performances late in the campaign.
”I’m not sure I’ll get a good reception but I had a fantastic time there”, he said.
‘Unfortunately it didn’t end well but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there with the fans and I’m looking forward to going there and see a few familiar faces. I’ll enjoy it.”
Townsend has never looked as good as he did in black and white since leaving and a return has always been mooted by our punters. Still, Benitez’s full-backs will need to be at their very best to keep him quiet, along with Wilfried Zaha.
