Newcastle remain in the relegation zone of the Premier League during the international break.

The Magpies have just one point on the board from the opening four fixtures. Rafael Benitez’s side were handed a tough set of games to start the new campaign but will be disappointed in his team’s performances so far. They will be tested yet again next weekend with a visit from in-form Arsenal next on the agenda.

There will be concerns at both ends of the field for the former Liverpool boss. New signing, Salomon Rondon, has been isolated in the attack and a lack of goals could plague the Magpies again this season. However, United have looked equally shaky in defence which could prompt Benitez to look for reinforcements when the window reopens in January.

The perfect solution to their problems would be Chelsea defender – Gary Cahill. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the England international has been a mainstay in the defence since leaving Bolton Wanderers back in 2012. He made 27 Premier League appearances under Antonio Conte last season but is yet to feature under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

According to reports, the 32-year-old is currently considering his future at the club and will seek a January exit to find regular game time; Newcastle could be the perfect home. Cahill has over 340 appearances in the Premier League as well as 38 Champions League showings which would be vital in steadying the Newcastle back four. The Englishman is a natural leader who would slot seamlessly alongside Jamaal Lascelles.

Cahill has less than one year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge and Newcastle should move quickly to secure themselves a January bargain.
