As you can imagine, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are incredibly eager to read as many rumours and reports in regards to a potential Toon takeover as humanly possible.
For many of the Geordie contingent in our bar, the Magpies’ survival in the Premier League is almost entirely reliant on the transfer business conducted in the January sales. Indeed, our punters clad in black and white can only see good work being done if a takeover is COMPLETE by that point, such has been Mike Ashley’s refusal to splash the cash of late.
With that in mind, reports from the Daily Mail have at least proven rather promising. They claim Amanda Staveley IS keen on a deal, despite seeing her opening £250m offer reportedly rejected by the Sports Direct mogul. Staveley and her backers are not thought to be walking away from the prospect of buying the Toon Army, meaning there is still a glimmer of hope for all of those on Tyneside.
Though the takeover saga promises to drag on, at least the Newcastle fans propping up our bar have a reason to be optimistic.
It’s imperative Newcastle spend in January, no matter who is in charge. The Magpies desperately need reinforcement in order to stave off relegation, though a pre-Christmas takeover looks to have fallen by the wayside. For the Toon’s sake, those behind the scenes need to sort it.
