Newcastle’s January transfer business is yet to begin as takeover rumours continue to dominate the headlines.

Newcastle fans have long vilified current owner Mike Ashley who has so far failed to back Rafael Benitez in the transfer market. The former Liverpool boss stated it would be a ‘miracle’ if he was to save the club from relegation this season. Despite an improved spell of form over the festive period, the Magpies are just two points clear of the relegation zone heading into the winter fixtures.

Atlanta United superstar, Miguel Almiron, is believed to be Benitez’s primary target now the transfer window is officially open. However, the MLS want close to £30m for their prized asset and the Paraguay international’s wage demands are reported (via the Chronicle) to be astronomical. Therefore, Benitez could be forced to look for alternatives.

One man he could consider is Rennes maestro – Hatem Ben Arfa. Valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, the Frenchman is no stranger to life on Tyneside after spending five years at the club after joining from Marseille back in 2011. Ben Arfa often failed to display his abilities in England after eventually moved back to Ligue 1 with Nice – instantly becoming a key player for his side.

After leaving Paris St Germain, Ben Arfa joined his current employers in September and has continued his recent form. The 31-year-old has already found the back of the net four times as well as registering one assist for his team-mates. The former France international has not signed a long-term deal with the club meaning there is an opportunity to bring him back to the Premier League.

Ben Arfa still wows fans with his mazy dribbling abilities and Newcastle have lacked a creator to truly unleash the potential of their forwards. Potentially available at a great price, Benitez could secure a bargain in January.

Newcastle fans, thoughts?
