Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are well aware that it can take a lot for Mike Ashley to open his chequebook, so this free transfer deal could be perfect for the Magpies.
Jonjo Shelvey has been a revelation for Newcastle since his move from Swansea in January 2016 and has established himself as one of the most important players at the club.
The 26-year-old’s range of forward passing allows the Magpies to get up the pitch quickly and can be deadly in starting counter-attacks. Without him in the side though Newcastle lack a playmaker and can look devoid of ideas.
The solution to this problem could be the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder and former Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye. Bear with us Newcastle fans…
Now 32, he is obviously less mobile than he was during his first stint at St James’s but could easily deputise for Shelvey in the games that the Englishman misses. In fact, he played 31 times in the Premier League for Palace last season.
Like Shelvey, Cabaye likes to sit deep in the midfield and control the tempo of matches with his range of passing. He is also still rated at £9M by Transfermarkt but will be available on a free transfer when his contract at Selhurst Park runs out at the end of this month.
It was no surprise that the Frenchman left St James’s in 2014 when PSG came calling and if he could rediscover some of the form he was in the last time he played in the North East then he could be a very shrewd signing for Benitez.
