The Transfer Tavern was packed yesterday as Newcastle United traveled to the Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea City.
While the game was far from a classic, the punters propping up our bar were excited to see Renato Sanches handed a Premier League debut after joining the Swans on loan from Bayern Munich late on in the summer window.
However, the Portuguese struggled in his first game on these shores and it was, in fact, another man who impressed all of those in our bar yesterday afternoon.
Indeed, Toon star Mikel Merino provided an assured presence in midfield for the away side, pulling the strings all day and looking like quite the coup for Rafa Benitez’s side.
Following his masterful display in south Wales, Newcastle uploaded a photo of Merino playing the ball next to an on-looking Sanches, praising the man they signed on loan from Borussia Dortmund as a wonderful addition to the Premier League.

With many Newcastle fans on Twitter yesterday claiming the Spaniard was better than the Swansea man, could this be a tongue-in-cheek reference how hyped the latter was?
We think it is.
