While two losses on the bounce aren’t a huge amount to shout about, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are still absolutely delighted about the fact they have Rafa Benitez. Even after all this time, it’s still hard to believe for some of them.
Indeed, with the Spaniard thought to have snubbed a move to West Ham United, the love affair between he and the Magpies only grows deeper. Well, for now at least.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Hammers still retain an interest in the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss, having come close to hiring him in 2015. Though the Irons recently installed David Moyes as Slaven Bilic’s replacement, this report claims the thinking behind the Scot’s reportedly short-term deal in East London is to allow them to assess their options at the end of the campaign.
Whether or not that would change the situation with Benitez on Tyneside remains to be seen, though the interest from the London Stadium doesn’t seem to have fully gone.
It’s imperative that Newcastle get taken over as soon as possible. To keep Benitez, they need someone to pump money into the club over the next few windows, with Spaniard’s frustration evident on Saturday during the loss to Bournemouth.
