Reports in the Guardian claim that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley could be on the verge of finally selling the Tyneside club.

Ashley has been trying to sell the club for a number of years and has been at war with the Newcastle supporters who have grown tired over the lack of investment in the playing squad. Rafael Benitez has been forced to work with what he’s got in recent transfer windows, and the Magpies have struggled immensely this season. Newcastle fans could finally see the back of the Sports Direct owner if the latest reports are to be believed.

An unknown buyer is believed to be close to sealing a deal for the club and could provide Benitez with some much-needed transfer funds in January. To help steer the club away from danger, serious investment is needed.

One man who should be on Benitez’s shortlist is Atlanta United superstar – Josef Martinez. Valued at £5.85m by Transfermarkt, the Venezuela international has been shattering records in the MLS since joining from Torino last summer. The 25-year-old can’t stop scoring since moving to the States, netting an incredible 34 goals in 38 appearances during all competition so far this season.

A powerful, pacey forward – Martinez has all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League. The forward primarily operates as the number nine but is also comfortable on either wing, making him a useful option for Benitez to have at his disposal. His incredible scoring record highlights his excellent finishing ability – his goals could help Newcastle move away from the bottom of the table.

Indeed, competition in the MLS is inferior to the Premier League. However, Martinez has earned the chance to shine on English shores.
