Newcastle United’s struggles up front since returning to the Premier League have been well-documented. Indeed, considering the long history the Magpies have with famous centre-forwards, the current dearth of a cult-hero on Tyneside is indicative of the current state of the club.
While loan signing Salomon Rondon may turn out to be a hero in black and white, the options behind him are fairly light. The likes of Ayoze Perez and Joselu may work hard but don’t offer a huge amount in front of goal, perhaps the major fault in Rafa Benitez’s side.
So, we recently asked our Newcastle supporting readers whether or not they actually rated the signing of Joselu. The Spaniard joined from Stoke City last season in a cut-price deal and, while he has scored twice already this season, often invoked the ire of the Toon Army last season for some ineffectual performances.
Interestingly enough, however, it seems the former Real Madrid academy man retains support on Tyneside. 61% of polled fans back the 28-year-old as someone who does the job, while only 31% of those who voted believe him to be a complete and utter flop.
Score more goals like the ones against Tottenham and Chelsea and perhaps the naysayers will disappear altogether.
