Life amongst the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern has improved of late.
Though the summer window had dragged on for our resident Geordies, the fact the club look to have signed Borussia Dortmund midfield Mikel Merino – adding to the recent signings of Jacob Murphy and Javier Manquillo – has seriously impressed the punters propping up our bar.
Indeed, more good news has come in the shape of a transfer tidbit from Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones.
Sounds like Newcastle could go ahead with a bid to sign James McCarthy from Everton.

He claims the Toon Army could make a bid for Everton midfielder James McCarthy this summer. The Republic of Ireland international has long been touted as a target at St. James’ Park and the Toffees’ recent overhaul under Ronald Koeman has seen competition for places intensify on Merseyside.
The likes of Davy Klaassen, Gareth Barry, Idrissa Gueye and even Wayne Rooney can operate in central midfield roles.
While the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden currently occupy central roles on Tyneside, the Magpies have been crying out for a more defensive-minded option in recent months.
Jack Colback has failed to wholly convince in that role and our local Newcastle supporters do believe McCarthy would be a seriously strong addition, heading back into the Premier League campaign.
McCarthy would be a huge addition to the black and white cause. A seriously strong central midfielder, he’d give the back four a wonderful shield and allow the likes of Shelvey to flourish when given time on the ball.
He’d likely be rather expensive, though would completely change the outlook of Newcastle’s transfer window.
