Keeping lynchpin at Newcastle United is beyond vital for Rafa Benitez this summer

The Newcastle fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Mike Ashley either sells up or backs Benitez financially so that Newcastle can enjoy another good season with the Spaniard in charge.

It’s been a rollercoaster few years at St James’ Park but after an incredible 10th place finish in their first season back in the Premier League, Newcastle could be a force to be reckoned with should they recruit the right players this summer. However, our punters don’t believe it’s all about who they bring in, more who they keep in the current squad. Mikel Merino is a player many want to see at St James’ Park and after having last year to adapt to the Premier League, next season, the Spaniard could be a vital player in the team.

The £9m-rated midfielder is only 22-years-old but his performances showed last season that he is calm on the ball, and has a brilliant passing range which alongside Jonjo Shelvey, would make a formidable partnership when both are fully fit. After losing his place near the end of last season, Merino will be determined to prove to the boss that he is good enough to be in their starting 11 consistently.

The Magpies can’t afford to lose their talented players because those are the core group that got them to a 10th place finish. Newcastle need to do all they can to keep Mikel Merino and build a team around him and other top performers if they’re to stand any chance of having another good season in the top flight.
