Key Newcastle figure hints that 28-year-old star could be at St. James’ next season

Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are doing their best to not get ahead of themselves this season though they are top of the Championship and looking good.

The Magpies are naturally eager to return to the top flight at the first time of asking with Rafa Benitez doing a fine job in a division he had no experience of prior to last August.

The Spanish gaffer is more used to challenging for the biggest honours in Europe but he has adapted well and will surely feel he can bring some silverware to the north-east with time.

Indeed, many Newcastle fans are keen to see him stay for a good while at the moment and so they’ll be eager to see what he had to say in a recent Q&A with Chronicle Live.

He was asked a variety of questions but his answer over whether Siem De Jong – a player out on loan in the Netherlands at the moment – could feature next season was particularly intriguing.

He said:

“We are following all the players on loan, we try to watch their games and keep in touch with them regularly. We will decide what is the best for us and them at the end of the season, but I’m happy to see him doing well of course.”

Could De Jong be back in the fold? Quite possibly.
