Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be raising a glass to make a toast after learning that one of their star players is willing to commit his future to the club for a long time to come.
The Magpies have been enjoying life recently, with the side turning around their form since the turn of 2018, having gone on a run of impressive results and guiding them to a spot that almost guarantees Premier League survival next season.
News coming from the Shields Gazette gives punters even more joy and reason to celebrate, as they state that Jonjo Shelvey wants to remain at St. James Park for “many years”.
“When Rafa (Benitez) came to the club, he chopped and changed and I found myself out of the team,” he told NUFC TV via the Shields Gazette.
“But I went away that summer and got myself properly fit and came back with a totally different attitude in terms of trying to learn from him.
“He signed me for Liverpool, but I never actually got to work with him.
“It was more a case of wanting to stay here and get this club back to the Premier League, because they paid a lot of money.
“So it was about returning the favour, and hopefully I can stay here for many years now.”
Though it’s not always been easy for the Newcastle fans to get on board with Shelvey during his time on Tyneside, the former Liverpool youngster certainly has hit a purple patch of late and our resident Geordies are absolutely loving it. If they can keep him around for a while and continue to see his form continue, Shelvey certainly has the potential to go down as one of the club’s greatest Premier League-era midfielders.
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be delighted by the news that the midfielder wants to remain in the north-east for a number of years and will be hoping he will continue to make an impact. Finally on the same wavelength as Rafa Benitez, the pair look to be getting the Magpies back on track.
