The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are starting to dream in regard to Premier League survival this season. Indeed, the punters propping up our bar are still riding the crest of a wave following THAT win over Manchester United last weekend and life really is good amongst our resident Geordies.
With that in mind, the punters propping up our bar are starting to dream up potential summer signings. While no transfer window under the ownership of Mike Ashley is an easy process on Tyneside, the more optimistic drinkers who frequent in their droves are deep in debate.
Having said that, they are looking at swooping in on any potential fire sale at a relegation rival. Indeed, they could do a lot worse than finally addressing their long-running problems at left-back by moving for West Brom star, Kieran Gibbs, should the Baggies succumb to relegation under Alan Pardew.
Though Paul Dummett – who recently signed a new deal on Tyneside – has impressed in that berth, a lack of cover and competition in the role has constantly proved an undoing. Gibbs’ arrival would seriously strengthen the Magpies’ defence and both he and Dummett can battle for a starting position, something Newcastle haven’t seen in years.
During the Welshman’s absence, the likes of Chancel Mbemba and Javier Manquillo were deployed at left-back and the lack of balance in the side was painfully evident amid a run that saw the Toon Army fail to pick up a win in two months. By landing Gibbs, Newcastle’s defence would be at its strongest in years.
Valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, Newcastle absolutely should look to bring the England international to St. James’ Park this summer, should West Brom go down.
