Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side record a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town to move seven points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with their fellow relegation rivals having picked up nine points from their previous six league games, a run which left them in 14th place prior to Saturday’s encounter with the Yorkshire club. And the North East giants have put even greater distance between themselves and the relegation zone as an Ayoze Perez effort ten minutes from time was enough to clinch all three points for Benitez’s side, thus moving them up to 12th in the Premier League table and seven points clear of danger.
As such, there have been many thrilled Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing increasingly confident that their side will do enough to preserve their Premier League status for the 2018/19 season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Gent winger Moses Simon this summer.
And while the 22-year-old would likely be a good addition to Benitez’s squad, landing the Nigeria international would surely end the Newcastle career of £6.3 million-rated Jacob Murphy (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Magpies spent big money luring the former England youth international to St James’ Park during the summer, but they have since been repaid with just one goal and one assist in 19 Premier League appearances.
Significantly though, the 23-year-old has seriously struggled to stake a claim for a regular spot in Benitez’s side, having started just 11 times in the league this term, and ultimately failing to dislodge the likes of Christian Atsu, Matt Ritchie, and Kenedy from the starting eleven.
And while Kenedy’s loan move from Chelsea isn’t certainly going to be made permanent this summer, the former Norwich City man struggled even prior to his arrival in January, which itself is indicative of where he is in Benitez’s pecking order.
As such, adding another winger in the form of Simon is only going to hinder his first team chances even further, and with the Nigeria international being a year younger than Murphy, that would also be another indication that the Englishman is going to struggle to make it at his boyhood club.
Regardless of whether they land Kenedy permanently or not, the 23-year-old faces a battle for regular football in the immediate future at Newcastle – adding the Chelsea man and indeed Simon will only make it even harder for the winger.
In fact, landing Simon this summer could well bring to an end his short stint at St James’ Park.
