Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team go down 1-0 at home to West Brom on Saturday to suffer a second successive Premier League defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Baggies off the back of a 1-0 loss at Everton on Monday night, a result which brought their impressive four-match winning streak to an end. And the North East giants were unable to get back to winning ways on Saturday as a Matt Phillips strike 16 minutes before half time was enough to secure all three points for Darren Moore’s side, which mathematically keeps them in with a chance of avoiding relegation.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and flat Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can get back to winning ways when they travel to Watford next weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for Angers forward Karl Toko Ekambi.
And with a prolific striker arguably all the North East heavyweights have been missing this season, landing the £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer could well propel Benitez’s side into European contention next time round.
Ultimately, the Magpies deserve great credit for avoiding relegation this term, but it’s clear that if they are to move to the next level under Benitez in the coming seasons, they simply need someone who is going to regularly put the ball in the back of the net.
Ayoze Perez is currently the club’s top goal-scorer this season with just seven goals, while striking duo Dwight Gayle and Joselu have bagged just five and four respectively – add in nothing from Islam Slimani so far, and it’s evident which department needs strengthening.
And Ekambi’s arrival would do just that.
The 25-year-old has been in fine goal-scoring form for Ligue 1 outfit Angers this season with a mightily impressive 17 goals in 34 league games for the French club, thus helping them to 14th place in the top-flight.
And with in excess of ten goals in three of his last four seasons in professional football, be it for Angers or Sochaux in Ligue 2, it’s pretty clear that the Cameron international knows exactly where the back of the net is.
And with 279 chances created in the Premier League this season, the 11th highest in the division, Ekambi isn’t likely to be short of genuine goal-scoring opportunities, what with the likes of Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey, both of whom possess incredible vision, just behind.
As such, if Newcastle are targeting a European push next season, they have to bolster their forward ranks, and Angers’ Ekambi appears to be the perfect man to do just that.
