Newcastle United supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their side lose just one of their last six Premier League games to put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
Rafa Benitez’s men were just two points clear of the bottom three following their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City back in January, but the North East giants have since then won two and drawn three of their succeeding six games to move up to 13th place in the table. The Magpies produced an outstanding performance to beat Manchester United at St James’ Park last month, and they made it back-to-back successes in the North East last time out by easing past Southampton 3-0, a result which moved them five points clear of the drop zone with just eight matches of the campaign remaining.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can continue their recent fine form between now and the end of the season, and thus preserve their Premier League status.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Jonny Evans with a £3 million move to Tottenham were West Brom to go down.
And for just £3 million, Newcastle would be silly not to try and lure the Northern Ireland international to St James’ Park, as the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could be the ideal partner for Jamaal Lascelles to take the Magpies to the next level under Benitez.
Ultimately, 24-year-old Lascelles has been absolutely brilliant in the heart of the Newcastle backline this season, be it coming up with last-ditch blocks in his own box to bagging crucial goals in the other.
The centre-back, who was perhaps unfortunate not to get an England call-up this week, has proven to be a great leader and thus an excellent appointment as captain by Benitez, to the point that there is reported interest in his services from clubs further up the Premier League table.
Nonetheless, Lascelles appears to buy-in to what Benitez is trying to achieve at St James’ Park, yet a more solid and dependable central defensive partner may be needed to really take Newcastle to the next level next term.
And Evans appears to be the ideal man for that role.
The 30-year-old is vastly experienced at Premier League level having turned out for both West Brom and Manchester United, and while his arrival wouldn’t be a nod to the future, he was linked with both Arsenal and Manchester City last year to suggest that he remains a very good top-flight centre-back.
Be it with the ball at his feet or going toe-to-toe with some of the strongest forwards in the division, Evans has it all, and would bring a vast amount of experience to a Newcastle backline, and indeed team, which doesn’t have that in abundance.
And were he to come in alongside Lascelles, the duo would have all the traits to go on and become a formidable central defensive partnership – the sort that can take Newcastle up the division next season.
For a defender of that calibre, £3 million is an absolute bargain, and looking at what Evans’ arrival could bring to the Magpies backline, it’s a deal they simply must try and strike this summer.
