Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team all but secure their place in the Premier League next season courtesy of a 2-1 win at Leicester City on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Foxes off the back of successive victories over Southampton and Huddersfield Town, results which moved them seven points clear of the bottom three. And the North East giants now find themselves ten points clear of danger with just six games to go as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez set them on their way to all three points at the King Power Stadium, with Jamie Vardy’s late strike nothing more than a consolation for Claude Puel’s side.
As such, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are pretty certain that their side have done enough to remain in the top-flight next season, with their recent run of one defeat in seven playing a significant part in their revival.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Nice striker Alassane Plea.
And with Benitez’s side somewhat struggling for goals throughout the current campaign, landing the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer could finally solve their striking woes.
Ultimately, putting the ball in the back of the net has been the biggest issue for Newcastle this season, with the Magpies mustering just 33 goals from their 32 Premier League games this term – only Burnley (31) have netted fewer of sides currently in the top half.
And with the club’s top-scorer currently Perez with just six, and fellow strikers Dwight Gayle and Joselu bagging five and four respectively, it’s clear which department will need serious improvement over the summer if Benitez is to take Newcastle to the next level.
And that is where Plea comes in.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed two fine seasons at Nice in netting 14 times for the club in their run to third place in Ligue 1 back in the 2016/17 campaign, before bettering that already this time round with 18 goals in all competitions.
And with 22 assists during his time at the French club, it’s clear that he is not only just a goal-scorer, but he also has an eye for a pass from his days spent as a winger before playing more centrally in recent times.
And with an ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play, the former France youth international appears to bring together the all round qualities of Joselu with the goal-scoring instinct of Gayle – thus, he’d surely be a perfect fit at St James’ Park.
In fact, landing the 25-year-old could go some way to solving their striking woes ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
