Newcastle United supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team all but seal their place in the Premier League next season courtesy of a 2-1 win at Leicester City on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Foxes off the back of vital victories over Southampton and Huddersfield Town, results which moved them seven points clear of danger ahead of Saturday’s clash at the King Power Stadium. And the Magpies now find themselves ten points clear of the drop as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez secured victory for Benitez’s side, although they were made to sweat by the hosts when Jamie Vardy got one back late on, yet it was ultimately in vain.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom firmly believe that their side have done enough to preserve their Premier League status this season, what with the North East giants ten points clear with just six games to go.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand.
And landing the £18 million-rated England ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer is a deal they have to strike, as doing so could see the club move to the next level under Benitez.
Ultimately, it looks pretty certain that Newcastle will indeed be playing in the Premier League next season, but such is the tight nature of the division at present, the Magpies really aren’t far away from challenging for European football next time round.
And with a calibre of manager like Benitez, winner of numerous trophies around Europe, at the helm, they have a real chance of pushing on next season and challenging in the top half of the division, but the signings must match the Spaniard’s ambition.
And there’s little doubt that landing Bertrand, one of the most consistent left backs in the division in recent years, would be a step in the right direction.
The 28-year-old has impressed hugely during his time on the South Coast to the point that he appears to be England’s number one left back heading into this summer’s World Cup, moving ahead of Danny Rose and co in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order such have been his efforts for the Saints.
Arguably, the former Chelsea man hasn’t quite been at his best this term in a poor Southampton team, but his status as England’s first-choice left back, alongside several years of consistent displays down the left flank, simply cannot be forgotten – there’s a reason the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham are also thought to be keen on the 28-year-old.
And while Paul Dummett has been excellent at left back for Newcastle this term, there is little doubting that Bertrand is an all round better option in that position, be it defensively or indeed going forward, the latter where the Englishman really has impressed in recent years.
Significantly though, Bertrand is the calibre of player Newcastle must be signing if they are to return to their former glories under Benitez. The manager is there, the infrastructure and fanbase is there – now more quality players are needed to push the Magpies on.
Bertrand is a quality player, and as such landing the 28-year-old this summer would help to take Newcastle to the next level under Benitez in the seasons to come.
