It’s been a difficult August for the Magpies. Just one point from a possible nine, and performances which have done little inspire, fans of the St. James’ Park outfit will be a little concerned heading into September.
One major point of concern surrounds a key player, centre-back Jamaal Lascelles, who was dropped for their Premier League home fixture to Chelsea. There are rumours this is due to a training ground fall-out with Rafa Benitez over tactics. The 24-year-old ex-Nottingham Forest man was dropped from the squad entirely, and did not even find his way onto the bench. This will be a major point of concern for Magpies’ fans, as Lascelles was a rock at the back for the North-East outfit last season. For a true dream September, Newcastle need this reported feud to blow over, and have Jamaal back in the starting line-up for all of their August fixtures.
A firing Joselu is also key to a dream September. The 28-year-old Spaniard has been misfiring for Newcastle lately, but the huge 6ft 4′ striker could make a big difference if he finds his goal-scoring touch. Goals have been an issue in August, with Newcastle only finding the net twice in their three fixtures so far. If Joselu can score two or more goals in September, it will give Benitez faith that his side might be in for a better season than he initially expected.
Lastly, six points from their four Premier League fixtures in September would be a fantastic return. Realistically, it will be a struggle to take anything from the opening two September fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal. However, back-to-back wins against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and at home to Leicester City would bring the feel-good factor back to St James’ Park, and give the squad a lot of confidence going into October.
