Talk of a takeover is rife on Toon tongues right now and the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for the process to hurry along. With Mike Ashley perhaps the most unpopular owner in the Premier League, our punters clad in black and white are eager to see him pack his bags and go.
Amanda Staveley’s interest in buying the club has perhaps been the most reported since Ashley put the club up for sale earlier this month and, while things have gone rather quiet of late, some interesting claims in the Middle East have emerged of late.
According to Abdu Dhabi-based outlet, The National, Staveley and PCP turned their attention to the Magpies after a last minute hitch prevented buying Liverpool recently. Indeed, the Reds’ current owners – FSG – are said to have pulled the plug on potentially selling the club, meaning Newcastle United reportedly emerged as an option for the Middle East-based Staveley and PCP.
As you can imagine, the Geordie contingent here in our bar don’t care how a new owner gets to them, just that they’re ready to back Rafa Benitez in the transfer market, much more than Ashley.
Newcastle certainly would be an attractive investment, if any new backer can get it right. Buying Liverpool may be more appealing, though if these Middle East-based backers can pump the right amount of money into the Toon Army, the sky really is the limit.
