Newcastle United are in desperate need of some inspiration going into their Premier League clash against Southampton later today.
The Magpies have really struggled of late in English football’s top flight, failing to score a single goal in their last four outings. So where exactly is Steve Bruce going to find this inspiration that could improve things for his side? Well the answer could lie in Jonjo Shelvey, who was excellent the last time these two teams met.
Back in December, the 28-year-old inspired Newcastle to a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park, cancelling out Danny Ings’ opener before Federico Fernandez grabbed the winner. For his performance, he earned the highest match rating on WhoScored (8.2) after leading the Tyneside outfit’s midfield.
With 64, only Jetro Willems (74) took more touches than Shelvey out of all the Newcastle players on the pitch. And when on the ball, the England international was making meaningful passes.
Do you rate Jonjo Shelvey?
In total, he managed four key passes — the most recorded in the game. After failing to find the back of the net in so many of their recent matches, it is perhaps that level of proactive influence from an individual that Newcastle need if they are to get out of this slump in the Premier League.
Bruce needs to stop this rot and Shelvey could be the man to help him do just that.
Newcastle fans, can Shelvey inspire the Magpies to victory against Southampton once again? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
