According to a recent report from The Birmingham Mail, Dwight Gayle is open to leaving Newcastle United permanently in the near future. The Englishman is currently playing his football at Championship side West Brom after securing a loan move at the start of the season, and with the 28-year-old producing some mightily impressive displays at the Hawthorns, it appears that he could well seek to stay there permanently come the end of the campaign.

And with Gayle himself reportedly open to the idea of staying at the Midlands outfit, it leaves Newcastle and managing director Lee Charnley with something to think about over the coming months, as while they should seek to sanction Gayle’s departure, they must only do so on the condition that they get Baggies striker Salomon Rondon in return.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the duo swapped clubs during the close season with Rondon making the move to St James’ Park to bolster Rafa Benitez’s striking ranks, and thus give the Spaniard the sort of striker he needed to lead the Magpies line in the top-flight this term.

And with Gayle proving to ultimately not be up to scratch in the Premier League, having scored on just six occasions last round, but very much a prolific goal-scorer at Championship level, it’s a move which made complete sense for both parties.

And based on the pair’s respective efforts so far this term, both teams are reaping the rewards from such decision given Gayle has netted nine goals in just 14 appearances for Darren Moore’s side this season, while Rondon produced his best display in a Newcastle shirt in bagging twice in their 2-1 win over Bournemouth last time out.

As such, it’s clear that both teams are enjoying the services of their loan signings and ultimately not missing the other particularly greatly, which makes a possible permanent deal for Gayle come the end of the season very much a possibility - and while Newcastle should sanction that, they must only do so if they get Rondon in return.

The Venezuela international offers a great deal more as an all round striker in Benitez’s team than Gayle does, with the 29-year-old strong aerially and able to hold the ball up to bring others into play, while he also has that eye for goal having scored at least eight goals in each of his three full seasons at West Brom.

And with Gayle as good a striker at Championship level as any, as illustrated by his tally of 23 goals the season Newcastle won the division, alongside the fact he has scored more already this term in the second tier than he did last season in the top-flight, he’s simply not what Newcastle are after in the final third of the pitch.

And with the £9 million-rated man (as per Transfermarkt) seemingly open to the idea of remaining at the Hawthorns beyond his loan spell, it’s a deal Charnley should sanction, but only on the condition that they receive Rondon permanently in return.
