Newcastle United supporters have been hugely frustrated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team let slip a two-goal lead to only end up drawing 2-2 with fellow Premier League relegation contenders Bournemouth on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their encounter with the South Coast outfit off the back of beating Manchester United 1-0 in their preceding league clash, a result which saw them end a poor home run of no wins in eight league matches at St James’ Park. And the Magpies took that momentum into their match at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday as a first half double from striker Dwight Gayle set them on their way to a massive victory, only for late goals from Adam Smith and Dan Gosling to preserve a point for Eddie Howe’s side.
Thus, there have been several annoyed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are already turning their attentions towards their side’s daunting trip to in-form Liverpool on Saturday.
And it looks like the North East giants could be without midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for that encounter, as the club’s official website confirmed earlier today that the England international suffered a knee injury at the weekend, and as such requires a scan to determining its severity.
The former Reds man, who celebrates his 26th birthday today, played a key part in helping the Magpies open up a two-goal advantage on Saturday, only to miss a glaring opportunity to put the game beyond doubt late on, and then fail to help defensively in the latter stages as Benitez’s side tried to hold onto all three points.
And several Newcastle supporters took to Twitter to express their views on the injury update, with many saying the same thing regarding how it may have come about, namely his failure to track back and help out defensively in the latter stages, which was pointed out by Frank Lampard on BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night…
Probably from resting all his weight on it while the rest of the team was defending

Putting all that weight onto his knees by resting on them instead of chasing back

He might have held them too hard near the end

From all that tracking back he did for Bournemouth’s two goals?
