Newcastle are on the verge of completing their fifth summer signing, subject to a work permit.

It’s no secret that Rafael Benitez wants to a sign a new forward this summer. Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set to join Fulham, and Dwight Gayle could also depart the club. The Spaniard is desperate to bolster his forward line after the Magpies ended the season as one of the lowest scoring teams.

After Fabian Schar sealed a £3m move to Tyneside, Newcastle also agreed on a fee of £9m for Mainz forward – Yoshinori Muto. However, Muto scored just eight goals in the Bundesliga last year as the club narrowly avoided relegation. If Newcastle are serious about their European ambitions, they need to aim much higher.

A fantastic signing would be Lyon forward – Mariano Diaz. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard enjoyed a brilliant season in Ligue 1, scoring 18 goals and notching four assists. Benitez shouldn't stop at his move for Muto and attempt to lure Mariano to England as well, especially if he wants to make a serious statement.

The 24-year-old is a powerful forward who will have no problems adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. He isn’t blessed with excellent technical ability, but the forward is a natural goalscorer. The former Real Madrid forward can lead the line making him a perfect fit for Benitez’s system at St. James Park.

Mariano remains a raw talent but has shown that he can score goals at the highest level. Muto, on the other hand, isn’t the answer to their goalscoring problems. Under Benitez’s guidance, he could be a top Premier League forward.
