Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side go down 1-0 at Everton on Monday night, in turn seeing their four-match winning run in the Premier League come to an end.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Toffees having beaten Arsenal, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, and Southampton in their previous four league games, a run which saw them breach the 40-point mark and thus all but seal their place in the top-flight for next season. Yet they were unable to keep their fine form intact on Merseyside on Monday, with Theo Walcott’s strike just after half time enough to clinch all three points for Sam Allardyce’s side, thus leaving Newcastle tenth in the division.
Thus, there have been many disappointed and downbeat Magpies supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can pick themselves up when they host bottom side West Brom this weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Newcastle fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Hull City striker Abel Hernandez, who is out of contract this summer.
And while the 27-year-old could well be a useful addition to Benitez’s squad, they must seek to end their reported interest in the £6.3 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), as the Magpies must show more ambition if they are to move to the next level next term.
Ultimately, Hernandez has enjoyed a decent run of form for Nigel Adkins’ Tigers in recent times, having scored eight goals and laid on two assists in ten games to help move the North East club away from the Championship’s bottom three.
But the Uruguay international has been plagued by injury problems in the last few years, hence he has only managed ten appearances this term, and with just 24 last time round in their ill-fated Premier League season, his fitness would be a huge cause for concern for any manager seeking to take a punt on him this summer.
Significantly for Newcastle though, Hernandez simply isn’t the next-level striker their club needs to move forward under Benitez.
Ultimately, the Magpies have done magnificently to avoid the drop this term given they have struggled for goals throughout the season, with Ayoze Perez their top-scorer with just seven.
And with Dwight Gayle and Joselu adding five and four respectively, they are arguably one or two quality forwards away from challenging for the European places, as that has been what has held them back this term.
And Hernandez simply isn’t in that bracket.
The 27-year-old has managed eight goals in 49 Premier League appearances during his career, but three of those came in his first six games at that level back in 2014, and he has since suffered a muscle tear, foot problem, and more recently has had Achilles surgery to call into question whether he can consistently produce the goods at the highest level.
As such, the Magpies should opt against moving for the Uruguayan star this summer, and instead show more ambition in their pursuit of the next level under Benitez.
